One-U RAI Faculty Fellows Program
Applications due October 1, 2025Three to five faculty from the University of Utah will be recognized as RAI Faculty Fellows based on their alignment with one or more of the thematic areas of interest. The One-U RAI has an initial interest in supporting Faculty Fellows in three thematic areas:
Overview of the Program and Activities
One-U RAI Faculty Fellows will be awarded for three years, with opportunity for renewal. As an RAI Faculty Fellow, the faculty member will be awarded an annual stipend equivalent to 25% of their base salary, bounded such that a minimum award will cover the average annual cost of a graduate student within the awardee’s department and a maximum award will be $75,000. The award can be used at the discretion of the awardee to facilitate research as part of this initiative. One-U RAI Faculty Fellows will be expected to participate in the RAI community through activities and research. In addition, the RAI Faculty Fellow will be granted a research appointment at SCI, which will include access to SCI services as appropriate, and will be given opportunities for involvement with the RAI Executive Committee.

- One-page Cover letter including:
- justification of your qualification, including service highlights, courses taught, clinical work, research publications, or description of other efforts,
- alignment with the RAI and thematic areas and planned contributions to RAI, and
- description of the benefit of the RAI Faculty Fellowship to you and your research
- Letter of support from your department and/or college providing recommendation of your candidacy for this program (sent directly to penny.atkins@utah.edu)

The One-U RAI Executive Committee and Faculty Engagement Committee will review applications and make recommendations based on:
- alignment with the goals of the One-Utah RAI and associated thematic area, through evidence of or potential for:
- expertise and accomplishments with AI,
- publications, thought leadership, and/or national presence on the use of AI,
- ethical and responsive use of AI to improve research, and
- engagement with internal and/or external partnerships and transdisciplinary collaborations to promote growth, innovation, dissemination, and use of AI
- ability to bring unique perspectives from varied backgrounds.

Applications will be reviewed on a yearly basis with a submission deadline of October 1. Application decisions can be expected within 6-8 weeks of submission.

Applicants should be current or incoming faculty at the University of Utah with an active appointment as of January 1 following submission of the application.

RAI Faculty Fellows will be expected to be actively engaged in multidisciplinary research teams focused on advancing one or more of the RAI thematic focus areas. RAI Faculty Fellows will also be expected to participate in RAI activities, including distinguished visitor lectures, community events, and communications, and to complete a yearly survey on the value of the program. Renewal of the fellowship will be assessed based on involvement with and contributions to the RAI on a yearly basis.

- Who should I get a letter of recommendation from? Your letter of recommendation should come from your department chair, however letters from division chiefs, other department leadership, or college deans will also be considered as alternatives.
- What content should be included in my letter of recommendation? The letter should endorse your candidacy, express confidence in your potential to excel if awarded the fellowship, and highlight your qualifications and alignment with the One-U RAI.
