Issues in Science and Technology: AI Slop Risks Future Discovery

August 13, 2026

One-U Responsible AI Initiative faculty fellow Isabelle Freiling co-authored a short piece that appeared in the summer 2026 edition of Issues in Science and Technology, a quarterly policy-focused journal published by the National Academy of Sciences and Arizona State University. Freiling worked with fall 2025 distinguished visitor Dietram A. Scheufele and Duke University Ph.D. student Megan K. Taylor to craft a response to "Charting a Course for AI in Science," an article from the spring 2026 edition of Issues. Their response ran in the journal’s forum section, a key Issues component that allows experts to weigh in on previously published pieces.

"If we, as a scientific community, end up spiraling toward less and less reliable AI-enhanced science, however, increased public distrust will not be a problem of science communication or science policy; it will fundamentally undermine science’s standing in society," the trio wrote. "And those effects will be hard to turn back."
