Visiting Fellowships
Through its Visiting Fellows Program—formerly the Distinguished Visitors Program—the One-U Responsible Artificial Intelligence Initiative (One-U RAI) hosts prominent individuals and rising stars from academia, government, or industry at the University of Utah. The overarching goal of the program is to welcome an exchange of ideas and stimulate discussion and future research around responsible AI. Visitors align with One-U RAI's mission and at least one of its three thematic areas, listed below.
Overview of Activities
The activities of each visiting fellow vary depending on their background and length of stay; however, all visitors give a seminar and engage with faculty and students during their visit. Opportunities for engagement include research collaborations, student co-supervision, curriculum consultations, teaching or co-teaching a course, guest lectures, student group mentoring sessions, hosting office hours or luncheons, and much more.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and can be submitted online—either by a potential fellow or by a University of Utah host recommending a potential fellow.
Applications should include:
- Current CV of potential fellow (this can be substituted by a website if submitted by host)
- Cover letter with the following:
- Description of the motivations and qualifications of the visitor, including a description of alignment with the goals of One-U RAI and associated thematic area
- Potential people or departments that the visitor might engage with at the University of Utah
- Proposed duration of visit, including a high-level timeline of activities and events
- Estimated budget, including travel and award
- Name and contact information of University of Utah host
- Letter of support from University of Utah host

The One-U RAI Executive Committee and Faculty Engagement Committee will review applications and make recommendations based on:
- alignment with the goals of One-Utah RAI and associated thematic area;
- potential synergies with research efforts at the University of Utah and potential for collaborations between faculty and researchers;
- ability to bring unique perspectives from varied backgrounds; and
- potential impact of the visit on faculty, students, and the community.
These criteria will be assessed based on:
- expertise and accomplishments with AI;
- publications, thought leadership, and/or national presence on the use of AI;
- ethical and responsive use of AI to improve research;
- engagement with internal and/or external partnerships and transdisciplinary collaborations to promote growth, innovation, dissemination, and use of AI;
- interest in serving in a consultative, amplifier, partner, and/or catalyst role; and
- opportunity to produce a clearly defined deliverable/contribution (e.g., panel presentation, seminars, training sessions, publication, white paper, grant, product).
Recommendations made by the Executive Committee will be considered by the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, and Vice President for Research in consultation with the One-U RAI director. Invitations will be made by the One-U RAI director.

One-U RAI will cover an award and travel costs for invited visitors and will support the organization of associated events. The award will vary based on the prominence of the fellow, the proposed activities, and the length of the visit. One-U RAI can help with arrangements for housing and childcare for the duration of the visit upon request. For visits longer than two weeks, the travel of significant others or family members may also be supported.
Applicants should propose an estimated budget, including travel and award, commensurate with the proposed scope and duration of activities; all budget components are subject to review and open to negotiation in coordination with One-U RAI.

Visiting fellows must be willing to travel to the University of Utah for their visit. The university may be able to support visitors in need of a U.S. visa for visits longer than one month with appropriate notice, and all arrangements will be contingent on approval of the visa. The visit should be planned within 12 months of the award, unless otherwise specified in the application. Within one month of completion of the visit, awardees must complete an exit survey.
Visiting fellows will be hosted by One-U RAI in coordination with a faculty member from the University of Utah. The faculty host will provide support for the potential visitor through the application process and duration of the visit(s). An application may be submitted by a potential visitor or their host. Potential visitors interested in applying may contact One-U RAI for assistance in identifying a host as needed.
